the British Indian novelist who combines magical realism with historical fiction, much of it dealing with relationships between East and West. His novels include Midnight's Children, winner of the Booker Prize in 1981, The Satanic Verses, center of a major controversy, and The Moor's Last Sigh, published before this interview from January 20, 1996.
